Bodegas Rafael López de Heredia Viña Tondonia was founded in 1877 in Haro by Don Rafael López de Heredia. This historic winery embodies the purest classic tradition of the Rioja Designation of Origin. From its inception, it has been a family estate, currently managed by the fourth generation, represented by the three López Heredia Montoya siblings (María José, Mercedes, and Julio). Bodegas López de Heredia uses grapes grown in its own vineyard, acquired by the founder's great-grandfather. Faithful to tradition, they are committed to artisanal winemaking, fermenting in wooden vats, manual racking, and very long aging periods in barrel and bottle. López de Heredia crafts its own barrels by hand, being the only winery in Spain with its own cooperage. Its red, white, and even rosé wines are renowned for their extraordinary longevity. Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva 2001 is one of the great wines of Spain and the world, a true oenological gem. Tondonia's Gran Reservas are only produced in exceptional vintages. The wine ages for ten years in oak barrels made by the winery itself. It is racked twice a year and bottled unfiltered. It is clarified with egg whites. The blend is composed of Tempranillo (75%), Garnacha (15%), Mazuelo, and Graciano, all from their own vineyards.
