Bodegas Rafael López de Heredia Viña Tondonia was founded in 1877 in Haro by Don Rafael López de Heredia. This historic winery represents the purest classical tradition of the Rioja Designation of Origin. Since its beginnings, it has remained a family-owned estate and is currently managed by the fourth generation, represented by the three López Heredia Montoya siblings (María José, Mercedes, and Julio). The winery uses grapes grown in its own vineyards, acquired by the founder’s great-grandfather. Faithful to tradition, they follow an artisanal winemaking process, fermenting in wooden vats, carrying out manual rackings, and ageing their wines for exceptionally long periods in both barrel and bottle. López de Heredia manufactures its own barrels by hand and is the only winery in Spain with its own cooperage workshop. Its red, white, and even rosé wines are renowned for their extraordinary longevity. Without a doubt, López de Heredia wines are highly appreciated, sought after, and considered essential in the cellar of any wine enthusiast or professional.
The Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva 2001 is one of the winery’s most emblematic and traditionally styled red wines. It is produced primarily from 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha (which adds body and warmth), and the remaining 5% divided between Mazuelo and Graciano. Following the winery’s artisanal philosophy, the wine was aged for 10 years in used American oak barrels, with two manual rackings per year. After being fined with fresh egg whites, it underwent a prolonged period of bottle ageing before release to the market.
