La Rioja Alta S.A. is one of the oldest wineries in the Rioja region. Founded in 1890, it is among the most historic and prestigious wineries in the Spanish wine industry. Its brands are synonymous with outstanding quality, and the winery has been a pioneer in the production of fine wines for more than 125 years. Among its most renowned wines are the Gran Reserva 904 and Gran Reserva 890. Other notable labels from the winery include Viña Arana, Viña Ardanza, and Viña Alberdi.

The 1973 vintage was officially classified as average by the Rioja DOCa. Over time, however, it has proven to be an exceptional vintage for ageing, and many wine enthusiasts and collectors hold the 1973 wines in particularly high regard.
